Founded in 1938, this town was named Surprise by Flora Mae Statler because she would be surprised if the town ever amounted to anything. For years, her name was fairly accurate. Even in the middle of the 1900s, it only contained a gas station and a few homes. Since Surprise was incorporated in 1960, it has grown as retirees flooded the area. Resort communities like Sun City Grand grew in the community. Meanwhile, Sunrise property management groups started other developments to house the growing population.
Today, Surprise is the spring training site of the Texas Rangers and the Kansas City Royals. Since 2008, Surprise has also been the home of the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex.
